Floyd County Demographics  website

Weather/Climate

In Floyd, the summers are warm and mildly humid, the winters can be very cold. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 25°F to 83°F and is rarely below 12°F or above 90°F (although it does happen!)

 

Stoplight

Floyd County has one stoplight. This stoplight is considered the center of town. It connects the two main roads leading into Floyd: State Route 8 (Parkway Lane/Webbs Mill Road) and US 221 (Floyd Highway). 221 North goes towards Roanoke while 221 South goes towards Hillsville. Route 8 North goes towards Christiansburg (northwest) and south to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

 

Communities

Floyd County consists of smaller communities: Willis, Indian Valley, Copper Hill, and Check. If you do not live in town, most likely you are considered part of one of these communities. Willis and Indian Valley are more western, the town of Floyd is in the center, and Check is on the eastern side of Floyd County.

 

Blue Ridge Parkway

Outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most visited sections of the National Park System. The Parkway incorporates numerous campgrounds, picnic areas and trails. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the southern border of Floyd County. The Blue Ridge Parkway is only six miles from Floyd. Along this stretch of the Parkway are Rocky Knob and Smart View Recreation Areas, Rock Castle Gorge National Recreation Area, and Mabry Mill which is the most photographed site on the Parkway.  Floyd County has more miles of the parkway than any other county in Virginia.

Cell service varies throughout the county, but cell providers that use Verizon cell towers seem to have the widest range in Floyd County.

Within the county, US Postal Service offices are located in the town of Floyd, Willis, Check, and Indian Valley.

Trash and Recycling

If you are a resident within Floyd, you receive the benefits of trash pickup; however, if you live outside of town, you must take your trash to the green boxes/dumpsters located around the county. They usually have recycling as a nearby option as well. Recycling stations are available just outside of town.
