Join us for a chamber membership lunch meeting on Monday, August 26th at Noon in the Skyline National Bank’s Community Room. Lunch will be provided.  To be included in the lunch arrangements, please RSVP to the chamber by Friday, August 23rd at info@FloydChamber.org or 540-745-4407.

Our speaker will be Ramain Gohar, Business Services Manager for the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD), who will speak about his organization.  Ramain works within the Business Development and Outreach Services (BDOS) Division which is the economic development arm of the SBSD.  BDOS is often the first point of contact for small businesses interested in growing their business by obtaining more information about the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority or learning the marketing advantages of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s certification as a SWaM (Small, Woman-owned, or Minority-owned) business and Micro business.   The mission is to provide resources that will enable small business in Virginia to grow, create jobs and strengthen Virginia’s economy.

The BDOS team is geographically dispersed throughout the Commonwealth, provides an array of valuable workshops, seminars and classes.  The events are often planned in coordination with subject-matter experts throughout the Commonwealth on a variety of topics designed to enhance the forward-mobility of small business growth.  Some of the events offered include, but are not limited to:

  • Selling to the Commonwealth
    This is most often a three-hour workshop with an overview of the Commonwealth’s electronic procurement system, electronic Virginia, or eVA.  Key in this session is a demonstration on finding a targeted market for a specific commodity or service; which agencies most often purchase that commodity/service and the dollars historically spent in those categories as well as identifying opportunities for businesses to sell their products/services.  In addition, key information on the Commonwealth’s SWaM certification is offered with an overview of the marketing advantage of the SWaM and Micro business certifications and steps needed to apply for these certifications.
  • Selling to the Commonwealth Computer Labs
    These sessions are hands-on in a computer lab for small business owners to work through their own individual eVA registration and perform research on finding a targeted market within the Commonwealth of Virginia e-procurement system.
  • Entrepreneur Express
    This is a half-day workshop targeting individuals researching a business start-up or small business owners who have been in business less than three years.  Some of the topics covered are business plans; marketing your business; financing your business and an invaluable overview of additional government resources available to small businesses.
  • Growing Sales Conferences
    These are half-day events targeting a more mature small business audience. These events offer three time slots for workshops and each time slot offers anywhere from 3-5 different topics. By event’s end, each business owner will have attended 3 workshops out of 12-15.  In addition, key business resources will be exhibiting, providing added benefit for attendees.
  • Regional Connect Events
    These events are a prime networking opportunity for state buyers and small businesses to have one-on-one conversations about what the buyers are purchasing and how best to navigate this process.  These events are intended to be limited in size to allow for meaningful one-on-one conversations.  Generally four events are held each year and are held throughout the state.
  • One-on-One Business Counseling
    Another vital service provided by the BDOS team is the one-on-one business counseling sessions.  Through a local Business Services Manager, small businesses are able to set up a one-on-one appointment to go over the individual business growth plan.

The Chamber’s  meeting schedule alternates each month between evening board meetings and hour-long, membership-oriented lunchtime meetings, typically on the fourth Monday of each month.  The board business items are eliminated/abbreviated at lunchtime meetings to include more time for presenting topics of general interest to the membership and for membership discussion. Lunch is provided by a chamber member sponsor for these meetings except in December.

The Skyline Bank Community Room is located at 203 Oxford Street in Floyd.  Guests can park in the courthouse parking lot at the corner of Rt8/Locust St. and Oxford Street in the two rows closest to the building.  The Community Room is in the brick building just off the parking lot opposite the Rt. 8 side of the parking lot.  A concrete ramp leads to the front door of the Community Room, accessed from the parking lot.

James Cabler, Director of Business Engagement for Onward NRV, provided a presentation at the June lunch meeting about his organization.

The Town of Floyd, County of Floyd, and Floyd Tourism Office hosted a well attended Business Appreciation Luncheon on May 3rd in recognition of Business Appreciation Month.  You can view each of the host presentations by clicking on the following links:

Kevin Byrd, the commission’s Executive Director provided a presentation about the New River Valley Regional Commission at your chamber's February membership lunch meeting.  The NRV Regional Commission convenes community leaders to build relationships and capacity across the region; provides technical assistance to members; serves as a liaison between local, state and federal governments; and implements services when requested by members. New River Valley Regional Commission works to promote a higher quality of life by supporting Economic Development, Community Development, Housing, and Transportation programs. 2018 Annual Floyd Chamber Award Recipients

New Chamber E-News Submission Form
Your Chamber is implementing a new chamber benefit on a trial basis to provide chamber members with the ability to submit news items related to their business/nonprofit to include in the Chamber E-news sent to fellow chamber members and chamber partner organizations.  This process is designed so chamber staff can easily include in a Chamber E-news bulletin.  Editing down longer press releases and writing up info from flyers is currently beyond the capacity of chamber staff so the form is a trial to see if this will work well for most, if not all, our membership.   Please let us know of any hiccups or suggestions via email to info@FloydChamber.org. Sign Up For A Chamber Committee

Please consider signing up to volunteer for your chamber on a committee.  You can elect to help with a specific committee project such as the Leadership Floyd Program under your chamber’s Community Development Committee; help with your Chamber’s annual Rubber Duck Race in August or the annual Spooktacular Gala in October; or signup to help out at our Floyd Visitor Center.  Click here for an easy online signup form.


Floyd Visitor Guides Distribution

The 2017 Floyd Visitor Guides, produced by your chamber, are still being distributed.  We have shipped approximately 40,000 guides to over 100 Certified Visitor Information Centers and other visitor centers throughout the state.  These shipments have been supplemented by another shipment of 10,000 for paid placement in six official Virginia Welcome Centers at key interstate locations where visitors cross state lines into Virginia. 

The initial push to get new guides out to over 400 locations took about a month.  The guides are also mailed to leads generated by paid advertisements placed by the Floyd Tourism Office, and distributed to attendees at local festivals in Floyd County such as Floyd Fest and Chantilly Farm’s Bluegrass Festival and Yoga Jam.  Local artisans are also handing them out at craft shows in and out of state. Our focus has been to get them in places where it will benefit businesses that advertised in the guide, promote Floyd County as a visitor destination, and avoid wastage.
Visitor Guides can be requested by contacting the Visitor Information Center/Chamber office at 745-4407 or Info@FloydChamber.org.  The Visitor Information Center and chamber office is located at 109 East Main Street, next door to Blue Ridge Café, and is open seven days a week. 

The Floyd County Visitor Information Center is co-managed by your chamber and Floyd Tourism Office.

Not Getting Chamber Newsletters?

The most common reason for not seeing chamber newsletters in your email inbox is because they are being filtered as spam/junk by your email server or your own email settings.  Your regular spam settings may be too stringent or you may have inadvertently marked a previous newsletter as spam/junk.  Check your spam or junk email folder to see if the newsletters are landing there.  Try copying the following email address and pasting it to your email address book as a new contact:  no-reply@vrmailer3.com     

Another reason that you may not be seeing the newsletter is that if you are using Gmail, it may be automatically filtered into your promotional items folder.  If you do find it there, you can right click on the email and drag into your regular inbox and confirm that you want future chamber newsletters to land there.

The server that hosts your website and email address may also be blocking the chamber newsletter as part of a global policy.  In this case, it is best to contact your server's technical support and ask that the email address that sends the newsletter, no-reply@vrmailer3.com, be allowed to reach your inbox.
